TIDES RIVIERA MAYA

What kind of person would enjoy the Tides?
Honeymooners and couples looking for spacious villas, privacy and private plunge pools. There is more of a rustic, romantic feel than at the newer developments, with a Mayan Temazcal spa treatment, candlelit jungle paths past trickling streams, iguanas and parrots.

Can guests expect a proper pampering?
The staff make you feel like the only guest at the resort - with regular checks to make sure you have everything you need. Friendly, personable and efficient, they will remember your name and rush to help out. If you are celebrating a special occasion, be prepared for a surprise!

What really sets it apart from the rest?
The resort has been designed around couples, with double sun loungers, secluded hanging daybeds, candlelit beach dinners and of course the villas with private pools. Small, intimate and secluded, there is plenty to explore but never too far to walk. The beach is wonderful, 7 miles long, broad with smooth, turquoise sea. The personal service, pastries delivered each morning to your villa and your favorite pool chair prepared for your arrival. The swimming pool’s smooth beach entry allowing for a graceful descent into the water.

Which room do we choose?
Choose from 30 villas - each over 1000 sqft with its own private pool, outdoor terrace with chaise lounge, dining table and crocheted hammocks. Marble bathroom with Molton Brown amenities, indoor and outdoor showers. Bedroom with canopied beds, 500-thread count bedding, Bose DVD player and satellite television. The only real difference is size, distance from the beach and the presence of a personal butler. If you want to really splash out, then the Royal Villa, with private butler is a great choice.

How is the food?
Guests can also choose to dine anywhere, anytime... on the beach, poolside, or in the privacy of one's villa. All breads and pastries are made at the resort. The presentation is phenomenal, combining the bright colors of Mexico in a gourmet style - seafood is especially good.

What is there to do?
The close proximity to Playa Del Carmen means you could spend an evening or two exploring the ‘strip’ or 5th Avenue - host to numerous boutiques selling everything from jeweled coconut light shades to jars of natural opals from mines in Jalisco. There are also some great restaurants for ‘people-watching’. Head an hour south to Tulum to see the only Mayan ruins directly on the oceanfront, then spend the afternoon at ‘Hidden World Cenote Park’ where you can swim in the ‘sweet water’ coming from underground streams. The giant caverns, tunnels, stalagmites and stalactites are mind-boggling and the experience leaves you feeling refreshed and renewed. At this park, you could also try zip-lining through the treetops, rapelling or the ‘Skycycle’.

What are the drawbacks?
Entrance is by a construction road through other properties - which is bumpy and unattractive, they plan to improve the access. The villas are shaded by palm trees and can be quite dark.
