HACIENDA SAN JOSE

What kind of person would enjoy the Hacienda San Jose?
For the adventurous culture vulture who seeks a real glimpse of Mexico. The hacienda was once a functioning henequen (sisal) producing establishment which has been restored to the peak of its splendor. Nearby, one can explore Mayan ruins and snorkel in underground caves, visit traditional markets, learn about traditional medicine and visit artisan’s workshops.

Can guests expect a proper pampering?
Rooms are spacious and luxurious, most with an outdoor Jacuzzi. Service is attentive and friendly, they will arrange as much or as little as you need, anything from chauffeur-driven tours to massage.

What really sets it apart from the rest?
The wonderful mature gardens, they are a haven of peace and quiet. Trees with intertwining root systems, giant palm trees, vines draped from branches and brightly-colored tropical flowers. Bats swooping down whilst you steal a private swim in the grand, floodlit pool at night. Local culture and customs enrich the experience, one appreciates the simplicity of nature, away from the crowds. There is much to explore in the area, it would be tempting to rush - but the real joy is in taking it slowly to allow for unexpected encounters.

Which room do we choose?
The Hacienda has 11 rooms, each unique - The Manager’s Room has its own private swimming pool surrounded by ancient walls and Number 9 has an impressive silk-cotton tree growing in the middle of the bathroom. For honeymooners, we recommend one of the 4 Mayan Villas with a grand bed hanging from ropes. These little houses with their ‘zacate roofs’ recreate the atmosphere of the Mayan towns in the region.

How is the food?
There are two restaurants featuring local Mayan dishes as well as International choices. Each is set on the courtyard which surrounds the main building and is open to the gardens. Bread and pastries are made fresh every morning - try the real ‘Huevos Rancheros’ for breakfast.

What is there to do?
Grab a copy of ‘Rutas de viajeros’ from the lobby, which is a book made just for guests of the hacienda to illustrate activities and scenery in the area - where to shop, where to eat, what to do on different dates, or nights - and how long it will take you to get there. A few of our favorites are ‘Tixkokob’ for buying premium handmade hammocks and sampling the delights of ‘El Rey’ bakery. Ek Balam, one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Mayan culture and famous for its ‘Mayan Angels’ but with a fraction of the tourists of Chichen Itza. Snorkeling or scuba diving in the crystal clear water of a Cenote (or underground cave) - the stalagmites and stalactites form magical caverns - and the water feels like it would heal anything.

What are the drawbacks?
The Hacienda is around 3 hours’ drive from Cancun, we would recommend at least 4 days here.
